The federal FOI Amendment Bill 2025 proposes banning anonymous FOI requests and introducing application fees, which transparency groups say will deter community watchdogs and small outlets.
FOI's are a lifeline for Aboriginal communities and small publishers tracking how decisions affect Country.
In addition, this could decrease transparancy / accountability within First Nations communities.
Which is why we need to email Senator the Hon Malarndirri McCarthy, Minister for Indigenous Australians, and ask her to publicly oppose fees and push Cabinet to keep FOI requests free.
The bill is before a Senate inquiry now - this is the time to fix it.
